Louisbourg in Cape Breton (northern area of Nova Scotia) is the site of a large fort built by the French as one of the main defences of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Quebec. The small town of Louisbourg, not far from Sydney, the biggest city in Cape Breton, is now a small fishing port. The fortress is now a national park.
